Readmission FAQs

Students who left the university under academic suspension may apply for readmission for the Fall or Spring term following their suspension, but may not qualify for Academic Forgiveness.

  • To qualify for Academic Forgiveness the applicant must meet one of the following criteria, and attend the semester in which they are readmitted:

    • Academic/disciplinary suspension with a break in enrollment from UNC Charlotte for a minimum of one regular semester [Spring, Fall], and has earned a transferable Associate’s Degree [Associate of Arts (AA), an Associate of Science (AS), an Associate of Fine Arts (AFA), or an Associate of Engineering (AE)] during their period away from the University. An official transcript, with the degree posted, will be required to complete your application.
    • A break in enrollment from UNC Charlotte for a minimum period of 12 months and has earned a transferable Associate’s Degree [Associate of Arts (AA), an Associate of Science (AS), an Associate of Fine Arts (AFA), or an Associate of Engineering (AE)] during their period away from the University. An official transcript, with the degree posted, will be required to complete your application.
    • A break in enrollment from UNC Charlotte for a minimum period of 24 months.

  • Under Academic Forgiveness, only those courses in which you received a grade of "C" or higher can be used for academic credit. After the end of the add/drop period during your first semester back, your GPA will be recalculated and all grades below a C will be excluded from your earned credit hours. You will lose credit for any D's earned. Therefore, if you earned a D in a course that is required for your major/graduation, you must retake that course.
  • Academic Forgiveness is strictly an academic policy and does not apply to Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) calculations for financial aid.
  • Academic Forgiveness does not remove attempted hours.
  • Readmission with Academic Forgiveness also resets your withdrawal limit hours to the full 16 hours. Please click here to view the university’s withdrawal policy.
  • Forgiveness is automatically applied to all who qualify for it. You may request to waive the forgiveness policy in its entirety by the last day to add/drop in your admit term by emailing readmission@uncc.edu. Otherwise, an academic petition must be submitted if you are requesting to waive the Academic Forgiveness after that add/drop date.
  • Students may be readmitted one time only under this policy.

Academic Forgiveness is applied shortly after the add/drop period in the semester the eligible student returns to the university.

  • Summer-Only Readmission is an opportunity for students who were placed on academic suspension or probation to return to UNC Charlotte as non-degree seeking students and take classes in order to raise their GPA.
  • Students who are academically suspended at the end of a Spring semester may register for summer school classes. Students suspended at the end of a Fall semester may apply as a Summer Only student to improve their cumulative GPA.
  • Please note that if you choose to take classes in the summer, the 24 month period for eligibility for readmission with forgiveness will start over at the end of the summer term.
  • Academic Forgiveness is not applied during Summer-only readmission.

However, you must fulfill your financial obligation to the university and have your financial hold lifted by the application deadline in order for your application to be fully processed, unless other arrangements have been made with the Office of the Bursar.
  • If you don't satisfy your financial obligations to the university by the application deadline, your readmission application will be withdrawn.

Ensure you have submitted all required documentation. i.e. transcripts, work history, and continue to monitor your Welcome Back Niner portal.

No, once you submit your application you cannot make changes to it.  You may have your previous college submit Official transcripts to transcripts@uncc.edu.

Once students are readmitted; you will need to meet with your advisor before you will be able to register.

Please allow approximately 4-6 weeks for your application to process after it's considered "Ready for Review" in the Welcome Back Niner PortalOur department will not be able to comment specifics about the status of your application, so your best resource for a timeline and where your application is in the review process is in your Readmission profile.

There are many components when considering a student for readmission. (safety review, Suspension, disciplinary, transcripts, GPA, Financial Holds, Department review).

Once you are readmitted there will be a hold on your account for advising. You will need to schedule a time to speak/meet with your academic advisor:

  • You can find your academic advisor’s contact information in DegreeWorks in your My UNC Charlotte account.
  • You can also schedule an appointment with your advisor through our scheduling system connect.
  • Reach out to Niner Central to discuss Financial Aid, Residency Determination & Billing.

Readmission with Academic Forgiveness allows for your GPA to be recalculated with all grades below a C excluded from your earned credit hours. You will lose credit for any D’s earned; therefore, if you earned a D in a course that is required for your degree major/graduation, you must retake the course.
